February is Dental Health Month!

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) reports 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats have some kind of oral disease by the age of 3.

But never fear, pet owners — February is National Pet Dental Health Month, so now is the perfect time to call your veterinarian and schedule a dental check up for your furry family members.

Here at CVC we have been busy doing dental work on both dogs, and cats. Here's a look at one of our patients that was in this week for dental cleaning, and some extractions were also needed. Zenia, a 10 year old Miniature Poodle, who had plaque & tartar buildup and peridontal disease.

Preparing for Zenia's dentistry.

A dental X-ray is used to take photos of what we cannot see below the gum line. Think of the tooth as an iceberg - what is visible to your eye is not the whole story!

Meghan, our technician, scaling teeth. Scaling is important for the removal of plaque and tartar buildup, which can cause inflammation and other problems if left untreated. After the scaling is done, we polish & rinse the teeth and gums.

Dr. April probing the gum line. Just like when you are at the dentist, your pet's teeth have to be probed to find any pockets that are present due to peridontal disease.

Dr. April has some extracting to do!

Dr. April suturing up where the extractions were made.

After the dental has been complete, you can see how clean Zenia's teeth are now. Antibiotics and pain medication are sent home with her for her recovery. She is such a cute little dog, and was an excellent patient!
